Soaring property prices mean houses are at their least affordable level since 1991 while purchase costs have also deteriorated, figures released today indicate.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) said the cost of getting onto the housing ladder and maintaining your position once there deteriorated in 2006, suggesting that first-time buyers are increasingly being priced out of the market.

RICS's accessibility index - which looks at how much maiden buyers need to save to afford upfront costs when buying a home worsened by 13.8% in 2006.

Its run away prices now.. with the increase again fromt eh bank of engalnd in interest prices... i can only say dont buy a house for 5 years.. because when that interest rate hits 6% the market will stall and may crash.. but if it does.. think of how many people that will be in debt??

It will happen, even the experts are pridicting it...

See, over here in the states, I can't afford to move out on my own yet...it sucks. You would think that a teacher could afford to buy a house or something...but I can't! *sob*
