You use Ubuntu. instead, run
sudo apt-get install gparted

My post was for Mandriva.

You can use su. Su is different. Su actually is used to log the terminal in as a different user, by default root.

Therefore, if you enter su and know your root password, you log in as root.
However you can run su someuser to log in as that user.

Now, Ubuntu is a bit different. Ubuntu doesn't ask you for a root password during setup, but there is a way to change it.
run
sudo passwd
at the terminal and you can change it to use su. This is also helpful if you lock up GDM or something and need to go CTRL+ALT+F3, instead of going sudo this sudo that, or just sudo -i, you can actually login as root.

I never saw the utility in top or its variants.

I always use ps.
